On February 23, 2021 the Common Council unanimously voted to approve funding of $688,149 to ReJenerate Housing Cooperative! As described in this Madison.com article, this is the first time that housing co-ops have been included in the City’s an affordable housing RFP, which previously had primarily gone to WHEDA tax credit projects. The change is in part due to the tireless work of the Madison Area Cooperative Housing Alliance (MACHA), which has been advocating for co-op equal rights for three years. Members of MACHA invited 30 City officials to a co-op dinner at Hypatia Co-op (pre-COVID), to give them a first-hand experience of the conversation and community that is created over a lively shared meal.
